Post by AVIP »

Looking at a r design at this dealer. 120k with some damage (loose bumper on one side and a scuff) everything electrical seems to work. All new timing belt and wp. Anythibg else to look for specifically on these r designs? Good turbo and bad spring seats!

Those a re very nice cars and rewarding to drive but they have electrically controlled shock valving and the shocks/struts are expensive. The stiffer suspension seems to wear out bushings and spring seats more frequently.
AWD angle gear collar wear can be an issue.

I have a 2004 V70R that has 210K on it and love it! The car makes me smile every time I drive it so obviously I think the increased maintenance is worth every penny and every moment I spend working on it.

Like Jimmy, I had an '04 V70 R and again like Jimmy, think they are the bee's knees. V70 R is the wagon, S60 R is the sedan. P2 is the common platform. Expensive are the struts.

Here's my standard set of R links to outfit you on your adventure:
2004-2007 Volvo R Owner's Guide
V70 R tags in the VRD
S60 R tags in the VRD

From those three URLs you can get to dozens of the most important informational posts about these cars.

Every maintenance item is the same across the two cars (with the obvious differences in wagon vs. sedan) because they're mechanical twins -- AWD system, interior, engine, fluids, etc. The only exclusion is if we're talking auto vs. manual transmission.

I gave my R a thorough Stage 0 and new Continental DWS tires, and it rode like it was on rails, like it was a Tie Fighter or something. I'd switch that 3-mode suspension to "Advanced" and I could turn corners that would strain my neck muscles laterally. With those new tires it was a beast in the snow, too. It would accelerate from a stoplight faster in snow than some cars do in the dry :-D. Ninety mph felt like 40mph.

If you get a manual transmission R you'll get the full 300/300 hp/torque. The automatics got penalized 50 torque to give a safety margin in the transmission's operating life.

The satisfaction of owning the R was greater than any other car I've owned (around 15).

Thanks for the replys! I really wabt to go for it. They want very minimum 10k and they let me take it home for the day. 82k miles. New tim belt, brembo pads, tires and new tranny fluid.

Couple issues I saw:
One headlight wiper is sort of bent.
Oil pressure light flickers on occasion. Electrical or mechanical fluid issue?
One fog wont turn on
Minor bumper problems
Scuffs

My p80 is showing lol.. how do you turn on headlight wipers?

Given that is it worth it or walk away?

Activate headlight wipers by activating windshield spray/wash.

So this is an 82k miles S60 R, not the 120k car? Two different cars?

How does the oil level and oil color look? Transmission fluid level and color?

Does it pull hard? Straight? Stopping ok? Pulling when braking?

What do you notice? Listen to that inner voice.

Are there maintenance records? How many owners?

Sorry, don't know about Oil pressure light. Maybe Jimmy knows.

Taking a car home helps you build an emotional attachment to it and the seller knows this very well.

All the other stuff apart from the flickering oil light is fine. The oil light can be a shot engine with worn/damaged rod or main bearing journals.

I know it's unlikely at this mileage however nothing is impossible and this could be a major money pit on this deal.

Unless the dealer can repair this fault walk away.

I agree on oil light.
It is high probability that it is o rings in oil pan or the o rings at oil pan to block joint. But that needs to be repaired in order to know if it is serious or simple.

Sorry same car. had mileage wrong. 82k. He made a final deal with trade in 9150 otd

He said they would not fix the oil light. Car drives like a dream. No hesitation, pulling. Smooth braking. Felt great. Worried about the pressure light. May let it go
