2003 S60 2.4T Engine Stumble

Post by maddog2020 »

When I'm cruising at freeway speeds the car feels as if it is always stumbling a little, just hesitating, and surging, not stable. I've just cleaned my MAF and might consider replacing it, but I'm concerned that this sounds more like an impending failure of the ETM, although that problem seems to have been sorted out prior to model year 2003.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,

Ian

You do not have the ETM but the electric throttle used on that car can have issues with its potentiometers. You don't mention miles but the throttle issues can start at 150K miles.
Usually a message and warning light sets for these issues.
Several things could also cause your sym ptoms. Turbo control valve and turbo-intercooler and intercooler-throttle hose leaks can cause it.

I'm at 145k miles. I was wondering about leaks in the forced air system as well. Are these difficult/expensive things to replace?

Is the throttle position sensor separate from the throttle body, or would I have to replace the whole thing?

@oragex - interesting. Certainly seems a lot easier and cheaper than a throttle body. I'm going to try replacing the turbo boost control valve first (already ordered). If that's not the issue, then I'll try this FPS, and finally I'll go the whole hog and replace the throttle body if I have to. I guess at least by the end of it all I'll have a rock solid fuel and intake system.

I do think that the way the car is behaving it seems most likely that the throttle body is to blame, but best to try the less expensive and less painful things first.
