95 850T5R wheel vibration

Post by phils94850 »

Ive been trying to figure this out. I decided to jack up the front end and put the car in gear and watch the front wheels spin. At 30mph im getting a vibration. I decided to rotate the wheels on the drivers side and when I started the car and the wheel spun on the drivers side it was almost wobbling :o . I was able to take the wheel off and re-install and it straightened out. Still have a slight vibration.

Basically... i think the problem is, I have aftermarket wheels and they are not perfectly centering on the hub causing the vibration. The aftermarket wheels have center spacers on the hubs that are suppose to do it but the wheels are still a little loose and not tight on the hub.

Has anyone ran into this issue with aftermarket wheels ? im to the point of putting the factory wheels ack on it and be done with it... sorry for the long post.. here is a pic of the hub and wheels...

were the wheels balanced when the tires were installed? have you tried spinning the hub with the wheel not on it and feeling for a worn bearing?

i've always assumed that the tapered wheel bolts center the wheel bolt pattern on the hub bolt pattern, and that the protruding part in the center is not important for keeping the wheel aligned on the hub, but that's just a guess.

Perhaps you are referring to a Concentric Hub Ring. The Youtuber does a good job of showing the installation. The info that is left out is the hub is what actually keeps the wheels center and is where all the forces is supposed to be centered. The rim is for multi-vehicle fitments so the ring is critical.

The lug nuts are only made to keep the wheels on the hub but are not made to take weight from the vehicle (to a point) or forces generated from the road to the wheel/hub assembly. Those forces can cause the wheel to be off centered causing vibration or worse case weaken/snap/crack/shear the lug nuts. The good Concentric Hubs are the Billet Aluminum units but is no guarantee they will work well in every application.

Here is another video to better or more fully explain Hub, Spacers and Lug Nuts.

thanks for the replies and vids... the wheels are "proline brand" so im gonna contact them about finding the correct center rings, im sure that's my problem since I can take the wheel on and off and it changes the vibration...

That bolt holding on the rotor is not stock. On my stock wheels it protrudes as a small pin which fits into a hole in the wheel. Are you sure this bolt head isn't stopping the wheel from going flush?

You can just remove this bolt, btw. The lug nuts/bolts hold the rotor on once mounted.

I had exactly this problem when I bought my 96 855R. The aftermarket wheels it came with had hub rings, but they were about 1/2 a millimeter too big for the hub. The result was a vibration in the steering wheel that would come and go at speeds upwards of about 50 mph. It took several visits to the wheel balancing shop before we figured it out, but once the proper rings were installed, the vibration has never come back.

But if you could see a wobble with the wheel spinning on stands, I would go with what abscate said and look into whether the rotor bolt is interfering with the seating of the wheel. With my aftermarket wheels, I don't use a rotor bolt at all. It makes installing the wheels a little more finicky, but seems to work...

thanks MrPc... that's the exact problem im having and I noticed the hub rings are just a hair too big for the hub. Id say that's whats causing my vibration. Im gonna look into getting the correct rings and hopefully fix it. Im also gonna remove the rotor bolt, it doesn't look like it interferes though.
