1999 volvo v70 no-start, full battery coil connection order?

Post by sombat »

Hi everyone, my car won't start after I changed all new spark plugs. I probably messed up with the coil orders (forgot to mark the numbers before removing the coils). Does anybody has pictures of the coils and wiring that I can compare and try to guess. Is there anyway to confirm which coil belongs to which cylinder?

Check this thread. It might help. You can search the forum by tong in spark plug firing order. This one I just pulled. But you can see if they apply to your engine. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... er#p178015

Your 1999 has individual coils on each cylinder. The coils don't matter as long as the right wiring loom and electrical plug is going to the right cylinder..I think that is hard to mess up unless the wiring is all broken up since they are made to length.

Some of these pix might help sort that out

When I replaced the engine in my XC I resorted to looking at the schematics to figure it out. The loom had completely fallen apart and there are a couple that fit equally as well on either adjacent cylinder.

Thank you very much everyone for your information. I ended up getting my car towed to the shop since I needed to use the car soon. I truly appreciated all your responses and I am certain that I will get the right solution if I provide enough details of the problems. With the information from the mechanic, I think this time I left out some important details to the post, since I thought they were irrelevant. Go back to the start. Here are what happened.

1. Did compression check all cylinders (to verify another problem)
2. Over tighten one of the spark plugs and had to replace it.
3. Decided to replace all 5 plugs with non OEM which each one has one prong, while the original one has 3 prongs.
4. After change, the car started and ran but with excessive vibration. I was not sure if I messed up with the firing order or because of the difference of the spark plugs.
5. to test assumption on the spark plugs, put 4 original plugs back and one none OEM. The car did not start.(cranked but could not start).
6. Put 5 genuine plugs and turned the switch, the car cranked but could not start.
7. with 5 genuine volvo plugs and tried to switch some coils that I was not sure, this time the car did not start.
8. Put all 5 none OEM plugs back and tried to start but, this time the car did not start. and did not give any crank sound.
9. The car had to be towed.

The mechanic told me that 3 cylinders had low compression and they were not enough to start the engine. however, I told him that before this incident, I checked all 5 cylinders compression and they were fine(all 5 cylinders were about 150 psi, dry test). He suspected there might be something happened in between. On Monday he'll check if the "timing shift". Anyway, I did not quite understand about "timing shift".

S/he is checking that your timing belt did not jump a few teeth which will make the engine no-start or run poorly.

You might have a case of lawn mower syndrome. Pull those plugs, put a straw full of oil into each cylinder, put the plugs back in (not so critical for non-turbos, single electrode volvo plugs for turbos) and try the key.
