I was replacing the axle bolts, trying to fix the chirp when shifting Park to Reverse and Reverse to Neutral. The passenger side went in fine, but the driver's side axle threads are pretty much gone. The old bolt is pretty chewed up, too.
Anyone had experience with this? I'll call Raxles on Monday, but in the meantime I'm trying to find a replacement locally (Boston). Is this even repairable? There isn't much thread area in there to start with.
145,000 miles on the car; the dealer fixed the chirp with loctite adhesive at 80,000 miles. I only drive this car about 5000 miles a year, so I might get some life out of an aftermarket axle.
Any advice is appreciated.

I was able to get an axle from O'Reilly's Auto parts on a Sunday for $70.00. It was a true Volvo reman axle. Your old axle would serve as a core. Axle came with a bolt. I would not attempt to clean up the old axle threads with a tap.

Thanks for the great suggestion. O'Reilly's could get me an OEM rebuilt axle for $60.00, but not in stock locally. I couldn't wait the 3-5 days, and bought a Chinese "Tough One" from Advance Auto for $85.00. It came with a new axle bolt. I had to return the first axle they gave me - it was missing the toothed ring for the ABS sensor!
The axle ping/chirp is gone, as well as a growling noise when first driving forward in the morning. I hope it lasts.
I spoke with Marty at Raxles, to see if the core is worth keeping for future rebuild. He said they don't rebuild anything newer than '98 (parts availablity), but they replace the entire outer (part where I have stripped threads) on axles they rebuild.
