Hello All,
I own a 1998 Volvo V70 AWD, and from what I've found this car has always seemed to be a little different from other V70's (for example the rear suspension is self leveling). Another difference, and the subject of this post, is the rear right engine mount. From what I have read and seen on my car, the P1 AWD V70's have a rear left engine mount, one more than other models which have three, two in front and one in the rear. The fourth mount, on the AWD's, looks similar to the front right engine mount (not round). I have been trying to find a tutorial on how to replace this rear left mount but have had no luck online or in a service manual. Has anyone ever replaced this mount or know of a tutorial on how to replace it?
Thanks,
Shawn

Welcome to MVS.
Are you talking about the mount on the transmission that bolts onto the frame rail behind the left hand front wheel well or an actual engine mount?
As I recall on my XC the engine mounts themselves were pretty much the same except for an additional "mount" just next to the transfer case which wasn't really a mount at all - it was more of a travel limit stop that looked like a mount.

Mine was pretty easy to deal with when I installed a replacement engine. I loosely fitted the bottom bolts and the I put a jack under the transmission and jacked the transmission up until the holes lined up on the transmission. I seem to recall a clearance issue that required a swivel or something but I don't recall it being all that bad to replace.

Thanks for the help. I ended up replacing the mount this past Saturday. Here is a summary of what I did.
Here is the old mount, cracked and separated. It is garbage. Here is the new mount in comparison. In the first link cn provided the threaded stud part of the mount is questioned, and no conclusions were agreed upon. Some say it's to adjust engine height during the life of the mount and others say it is for ease of installation. I found it very helpful when installing the mount.
My first thought when installing the mount was to position the engine bracket in the same position as the old mount. I did this and found the engine sagged too low for me to install the fasteners. This must be the purpose of the threaded stud. I lowered the engine bracket down the stud, being sure to mark the stock height. Installed all the fasteners of the mount hand tight. Finally, raised the engine back to the stock height. It turned out to be pretty simple.
Again thanks for the help cn90 and Lee.

Good writeup.
I wonder how the original got broken? They are only on the AWD cars and yours is the first one I've heard about that has broken. The way it goes in there it seemed to me like it would have very little stress but my XC has an occasional strange suspension clunk that I haven't been able to track down. After seeing your mount I think I will take a look at mine.

I do not know the exact cause of the problem, but I would guess it would have happened as a result of being over stressed for too long.
Brief vehicle history:
I got this car from my parents who bought it in 2001 and it has been a family car since. It has been through a PCV and Turbo overhaul, done by my father whom I greatly admire, and numerous other small and large repairs. Another large repair was the exhaust from the turbo back, which my dad and I did about a year ago. We have put a lot of time and money into this car to get it to the 200k it is at today. I really love this car and am doing everything possible to keep it running.
Engine mount specific history:
When got my licence and started driving the V70 in 2010 it had a clunking/shuddering that came from the front right side of the car. We determined that it had to be engine mount related early on, ruling out suspension(struts were replaced at some point in the cars mid-life). I'll repeat that this was in 2010, when the car had probably around 150k on it. Being in high school I didn't have the money, patience, or experience to really figure out and fix the problem. When I got to college I realized I wanted and needed to make this car last so I started looking into what may be the source of the issue. I figured maybe the engine is grounding out due to some strange torque on the engine when turning and accelerating out of that turn. My first attempt to fix this, about a year and a half ago, was subframe inserts sold by ipd. They didn't make a difference and I continued to drive the car. I even started to hear this shudder in certain situations when the car shifted gears. 50k miles later, last month, I purchased the two non-round engine mounts and four subframe bushings. I've replaced the two engine mounts so far and have finally heard this shuddering reduce slightly in intensity. My next step is the subframe bushings and the two round engine mounts. I am hoping to fully eliminate the shuddering.
My guess is the mount broke due to overuse caused the many miles traveled on multiple failed mounts. The other non-round mount probably failed first shifting more of the engine weight to this non-round mount. I'd guess if your other mounts are okay this one is okay.

I am "rattling the cage" on this older issue from last June. But I have found that, despite what some folks have said, this rear, Left, transmission mount is in fact adjustable. I have had trouble with a bad vibration (99XC) and when I started to tinker with the positioning of the nuts on the vertical bolt on this mount I could change the vibration dramatically. with just a half or full turn the vibration would move from one side of the car to the other, change where it occured in the RPM range, or change where it would occur with loading (hills, acceleration etc). It is easy to test if this will affect your vibration issues, and 18mm open end wrench, pull L front wheel, loosen top nut, turn bottom nut and half of full turn up or down, tighten top nut being sure to keep mount surfaces lined up, road test. continue to tinker until satisfied. Happy Thanksgiving
