Dexron VI (Dexron 6) is the new stuff that is synthetic or of high enough conventional oil stock to be nearly synthetic. It is lower viscosity also.
It is supposed to be backwards compatible according to GM but other manufacturers have not blessed it for use in their older gearboxes.
I'm not so sure it is great replacement for the thicker stuff in Volvo 4 speed transaxles.

The question is if the transmission can even benefit from such a high quality oil?
I recently did a flush with Liqui Moly Top Tec ATF 1100 (on the website they recommend either 1100 or 1200 in their database) and the Transmission is working very good. It is nothing special and dexron III, but meets the volvo sepcifications. I guess anything that meets the volvo specs should be fine.
