1996, 850 Turbo, E-Brake Adj. Issue
I'm having a difficult time adjusting brakes on both my 850's. When I tighten the shoes they get snug and seem to bind up in the direction of forward rotation but seem looser in the reverse direction. Seems like I'm not getting a good adjustment. Now when I use the brake it just barely holds the car on an incline and when I shift from reverse to drive i will hear a snapping noise from the brake assembly. Has anyone else had trouble with this?

Have you removed the rotor to inspect the shoes and the actuator? A bad shoe or a bad cable can cause your problem.

If the shoes are original, then the friction material probably fell off by now.

Yes I have inspected and replaced the shoes. I have heard something about "bedding" the shoes.

I "bedded" e-brake shoes by driving at moderate speed and applying the e-brake gently until I knew they were grabbing. I would do this a couple of times then do a full test of ebrake capability, hold on a hill etc, no motion when dropping into gear (automatic) etc, basically what they do at inspection time.

Make sure you adjust them at the wheel, not at the handle. A lot of people take up the wear at the handle because it is so 'convenient' - which gives you a nasty job later on.

Check the jacketing on the cable, back near the rear wheels. It may be cracked and rusting inside, so the cable is not traveling smoothly under the tension of the return spring. This is a very common problem.

I think I messed things up, but not sure how bad. I was taking a look at the the e brake shoes and noticed that the tab that holds one of the shoes in place seemed bent so I tried to bend it back but then...it snapped off. The tabs that hods the ebrake shoes appear to be part of the dust (backing) plate and i am not sure how diificult it is to rempove and replace. Once I understand what is needed I will have to head to the local yard to see if i can find a donor.

I just noticed that the clip I broke is part of parking brake hardware kit from FCP. I'm not sure how these are installed. Can this be done without removing the backing plate?

I just noticed that according to the assembly drawing...the clip is shown to be held in by a cap screw. I'm going to have to take another look because yesterday I didn't notice anything that I could put a wrench on. Hopefully it's just a couple of cap screws that I missed.
