2004 V70 Questions about moving up

Post by obayha »

The sig line shows current driving machine, and it has been a good ride. But at 314,000 and counting, it's time to start the looking. Currently looking at a 2004 V70 with 156,000 miles and a few things not right. Rear tail lights on and off, wiper motor runs but wipers don't move, moon roof stayed open but is now fixed, (something to do with the alarm system??).
Everything I have read leans toward the DIM not working right, and could be a lot of the problem. I know this don't sound like a bunch of problems, but I don't think I am getting all the information from the owners. The history of the car was Volvo serviced until 112,000 then sold to sister-in-laws son and the maintenance is vague after that.
So the question is weather this would be something to try and purchase to fix or walk away from.
The car came from the sister-in-law to begin with and was sold the her son. My car came from same sister-in-law and was given to her daughter before I bought it from her.
Any thought would be helpful.

Maybe $1500.00 but even at 1700 it sounds sort of OK. You sound handy with these and an 04 will ride a lot quieter and nicer anyway. DIM's fixable I would think. Keep the 98 around for a bit as backup while getting the 04 100%

Carmax offered them the $1700.00, so I would just match it. The electrical problems are usually hard to trace, and you could be chasing your tail for a while, but the rest of the car is in pretty good shape.
Worry part is the '98 seeing the '04 in the stable. getting ready to replace the old dog..I would keep the '98 around until all the systems are running.

I currently have been driving a 1998 V70 and it has 314,000 miles on it and I am looking to purchase
a 2004 V70 with some known problems. From what the nephew has told me, it sounds like the problem or problems could be related to the CEM as I have been reading in this forum with threads to others. If I think purchasing this 70 and be able to put a low sum of money into it and having a good running 70, then I am game for a little work with good rewards. Most of the work would be a repeat of work done on the 98. The problem with electrical stuff is always a worry on any car. I have not found much material on the CEM and other coponents related to his problems with solutions. Sounds like the CEM has a heat sink problem and if that is it, then it could be an easy fix, if not, the low sum just increases.
Thanks for any thoughts on this situation.
Shane

CARMAX buys outright? Didn't know that. Park the 98 with its nose pointing out the driveway so it can't see the 04 otherwise it'll puke out all its oil and tranny fluid right then and there :-)

Not sure if it was for an outright buy or maybe a trade for a truck he is looking at.
Doesn't have much oil in it most of the time and the tranny fluid is original as far as I know. Should go good on pancakes. :o
Going to see and drive on Friday. Taking the 06 for the first visit.

Something is fishy in Sweden. Nobody in the trade en masse would buy a troubled car for 1700 to try make money on such an old car.
