2000 S70 Transmission project Topic is solved

I've been on this awesome forum for quite a while now. It has helped me a lot with sorting out all weird problems I had on my car. My transmission has been acting up for a couple of months and recently it just gave up. The car has 240K on it so I guess it was time. Tried finding a used one but it was hard. I have the AW55-50SN five speed one in my 2000 S70 which is not very common I guess. Called a transmission shop i was recommended and they quoted me $2950 for the job so I decided to give it a shot myself. One of the clutch packages was totally burnt out and I also found a steel plate in the pump that was cracked. Gonna buy the overhaul kit and replace the broken parts. Wish me good luck

What documentation are you using for this gutsy project? I always thought you needed a huge array of custom tools to do a transmission disassembly and that is wasn't a DIY project....

If you look around there are ATSG service manuals floating around. I snagged one off of a Russian server but that was for a AW50-42. The rebuild kits are pricey, as are the other hard parts, but they are certainly cheaper than $2900.00.

For the 4 speed, the price of the rebuild kit exceeds the price of a good used transmission.

There's currently an eBay seller providing frictions (not steels) for just over $106USD. I also have an AW55-50SN from a '01 XC on the bench which requires frictions and had a cracked C1-C2 drum. Slow going as I save for the parts.

The valve body rebuild kits from Transgo are great. Be sure to perform this as well to ensure longevity of your rebuild.

This would be a great addition to this web site. I still have my old AW50-42LE I would like to recondition. Lee, could you post that rebuild manual for it?

Has anyone found a ring kit for the NA 2.4? Rebuilding the tranny and engine, you could make these cars last quite a while. I can only find rings for the 2.3 turbo.

Yes i'm planning to do the solenoids and the valve body also. The overhaul kit basically contains o-rings and gaskets. Know of a place up in Anaheim that sells individual parts for this transmission. Probably not cheap but when its done it will be as good as new (I hope...). My guess is that the clutch burned up because of old/hardened orings.
Taking it a part is a no-brainer except getting the snap ring off the transfer gear. I have a friend that has the ATSG book on it which will come in handy because its all a mess of unorganized parts right know.

Last time I looked at the Hastings cattalogue they had 2.4 rings but that was over 2 years ago.

If you give up on trying to repair, have you tried V and S dismantlers? They are in California:

The early 5 speeds on the P80 don't share the valve body with later ones and are rare. I'd go with the rebuild but that's just the way I'm inclined.

My guess is that Matt would rapidly have a cease and desist slapped on him if I tried to upload it. ATSG tends to defend their copyrights vigorously. The link to the .ru site came up with a Google search for "Aisin AW 50-42le repair" and it was on the first page. They don't exactly have gigabit speed off of the server but it was only a few minutes to download it.
