2003 S60 Replace Cooling Fan Wiring
2003 S60 Replace Cooling Fan Wiring
I have an issue with the wiring to the cooling fan causing it to intermittently run and then not run. I have tried multiple times to identify the exact issue with no luck. My thought is to replace the wiring directly to the fan to eliminate the issue. What wires need to be replaced to do this? Can this wiring harness be purchased at a local auto parts store? Can I leave current wiring in place and just by pass with a replacement so the old wiring path does not have to be taken?

Its part of the harness so you will only be able to buy the expensive harness at Volvo or one of our sponsors who sells Volvo parts.
I haven't see a failure in the fan harness yet with the exception of front end collisions. It is not unusual for the computer on the fan itself to go bad. I think $150ish gets you a new fan and computer from FCP.
I would find someone with a VIDA DICE and have them command the fan speeds while wiggling the wires.
If you do find a failed connector then you can buy a pigtail or socket from Volvo. There are 2 power wires and one purple control/canbus wire.
I do not suggest running your own wiring without a reliable coolant temp activated switch ( and AC) . The fan is not built to run full time. I would consider it a fire hazard.

I had a new fan installed in January. I took it back several times because it was not running. They originally stated that it was because it was not hot enough to activate the fan. I took it back in May when they stated that they took the fuse panel off and tightened the relay and it started working again. It ran for about a week and then quit. I then wiggled the fuse box and it came back on temporarily. But now it is off more than on. I took the fuse box out tonight and tightened all the connections on top and bottom. It worked for about 5 minutes. I put the fuse box back together, and it quit again. Appears to be a short somewhere in the box but I have no idea where. Not willing to invest much more in the car though to make it work.
