1998 V70r Clicking Noise on Acceleration

Post by chexny »

https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.matthewsvolvosite.com/aud ... 98-v70.wav

I am getting this noise in link above (thanks matt) upon normal acceleration. It only happens at like zero to 5-7 maybe 10mph. It happens both if turning in a parking lot or going straight from a stop light. Any ideas where to start?

Thanks in advance.

I did not listen to the .wav file, but clicking at low speeds can generally be chalked up to failing axle CV joints. Axle replacement may be indicated.

What kind of total mileage have you accumulated?

Thanks. I checked the CV boots and they seem fine. The boots were fine and intact. There was some really think grease on the joint shown in the picture. The pic shows the outer side boot on the passenger side and where the grease was. The boot didn't have any visible tears and I felt all around it and didnt feel anything.

The clicking does not always happen. It does seem like it happens more if I am turning right but it happens while turning left and going straight. Always on initial acceleration. Anything else I should check?

Bear in mind that your R has two more CV's.
They're located at either end of the driveshaft that runs to the rear.
The front CV is very near the cat and tends to get baked boots.
Once the boot disintegrates, the CV follows.

There's also a U-joint in the center of the DS that may need
attention, but the front CV is usually the one that goes first.

The boots don't have to be torn for the axle to be toast.

But it would be unusual if that were the case.

Thanks for the responses. I just checked my records. Left front axles was replaced about 30k miles, RF axle about 5k. I will check the other CVs.

Regarding the u-joint. I had a new drive shaft about 35k miles. It was Volvo driveshaft - would that include a new u joint?

The driveshaft is two sections.
It has CV's at either end and a U-joint
and carrier bearing in the middle.
They are very much MY specific.

Check the control arm ball joints.

The grease/oil leak in the photo above:
- ? Old grease from previous CV Boot leak
- Leaking oil from oil cooler lines
- Anyway, clean the grease/oil stain and monitor it.

Thanks. I had my muffler rewelded (split right after Cat) and I think that took care of it. At least I think so because I just realized I am not hearing it anymore and I cannot replicate now. And the sound of it didn't sound like that.
