98 V70XC AC Hose Weeping Oil

Post by jmana »

There are 2 hoses coming off the back of the AC compressor, the one runs down along the bottom of the radiator (just behind it) and over somewhere to the drivers side. The entire hose is soaked with oil, and I can't figure out why?? It looks like motor oil. I have been noticing some oil on the underside of the engine, and it looks like it's all coming from this hose. Anyone have any ideas why?

Search forum for "Oil Cooler" and "Oil Tstat".

So that's an oil cooler line? I didn't think that would run into the AC compressor.

Hopefully these pics upload properly. I'm posting one showing the oily hose from under the car, and the other shows where the hose connects into the AC compressor. There are 2 of them, and in the pic they are marked with pink dots. The one that goes under the car is the one towards the rear of the compressor. You can also kind of see in this pic from up top where the hose goes, if you look under the fan shroud - in the bottom right of the pic - you'll see it (sorry I couldn't get better pics, I only had my cell phone on me).

Here's a better pic of how the hose is routed (looking from above).

The first picture shows the high pressure line from the compressor to the condenser. The line looks dirty but it is not very clear that there is a leak. Have you tried to clean it up and see where the leak is at? If this line were leaking you would lose your refrigerant and most of the oil in it very quickly. I am assuming your AC is operational, no?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

If you have a lot of oil in a turbo-charged engine it will accumulate in the intercooler (next to the radiator) and leak out the bottom hole..it then looks like the AC line leak

That certainly looks much more like engine oil than "PAG" oil used in the AC system

It definitely looks like engine oil, which is why I was confused why that would be present on a hose coming from the compressor. So the explanation that it's coming from the intercooler makes sense. Is this just a matter of me overfilling the oil pan? I know when I checked the level it was at the top of the line on the dipstick.

More likely some oil getting into the induction line from the turbo.

How many miles are on it?

Is the PCV system working well, and under vacuum at the oil filler cap?

It might just need cleaning out.
