Oil weeping from a new Aisin hydraulic tensioner - 1996 850 T5

Post by kllvturbo »

Hi guys,

Could really use some advice.
I'm currently in progress of replacing the timing belt on my 96' 850 turbo. When I started to install a new hydraulic tensioner I noticed that there's some oil around the small piston that pushes against the tensioner pulley. As far as I'm aware, it shouldn't be leaking any oil whatsoever. It is an Aisin BTV-005 tensioner which should be a good quality part.
So my question is: is it normal for a new tensioner to be a bit oily around the piston? Should I just go ahead and install it and forget about it or should I buy a new one?
Here's a picture of the tensioner:

It's shiny around the piston because of the oil

Thanks
Caleb

Honestly, I don't know. But i would imagine that they use some oil to prevent the o-ring to get ruined while inserting the rod.

I've bought three of those tensioners over the years and for what it's worth none of them had visible oil on the piston.
