My XC90 has started blowing hot air for some time after it has been running driven and then it will finally start blowing cold air. So far I have checked and re-charged the system to the proper level, it was actually where it belonged when I first checked it, made sure the clutch was engaged and turning, cleaned the coils, tried different settings inside the car and finally made a few choice comments about the problem. I'm wondering if there is a sensor somewhere that could be the problem.

What engine?
You are describing a very common problem with variable displacement compressors. The solenoid controlling the compressor sticks and once the compressor gets warmed by underhood temps it will work until vehicle sits and engine and compressor cools down.

Variable displacement compressors are new to me. Is the solenoid an intricate part of the compressor or can it be replaced separately. Last night about a 15 minute ride in the heat, then cool air. The car has never cooled like my 02 Chevy pickup.
