2004 S60R Blowing smoke after boost.

Post by mirage »

After buying the car I found the boost was set low. When setting the boost up I developed a host of problems. After changing the PCV the main problem is smoke bellowing out of the exhaust when changing gears after heavy boost. Can anybody tell me what the soleniod valves are in the PCV system are for .

Thanks.

Not sure what those solenoids are but, since you just bought this and being an R I'd check compression for peace of mind.

Thanks for the reply, I might resort to doing a compression test but while in boost all seems fine but when changing gears I take my foot off the accelerator and smoke blows out the exhaust for a few seconds then fine.
Makes me think it might have something to do with the recycled boosted air when the throttle has been closed and the turbo is still boosting.

Understandable, however smoke in exhaust comes from 2 places: oil and gas - hence their different colors. If you go the gas way - extra boost, etc - when you lift off the pedal there's no gas in the mixture.

Check the PTC ( solenoid valve on air intake just before turbo). Also check CBV operation (bypass valve on turbo). When you release gas pedal while boosting you immediately get a pressure spike headed abck to the turbo compressor blades. The CBV reroutes this air pressure back into the intake tube. If the CBV is failed the boost pressure can get pushed into bad places. While you have the intake tube off check the turbo for shaft play (wear that allows the turbo main shaft to move)
if you find shaft play the pressure on the compressor side when you come off the pedal may push the oil across the main shaft and through to the exhaust (turbine)side. If so - rebuild turbo
