All of the buttons and knobs in the car look like they are meant to be rubber like, but in old age they are sticky and disgusting. One guy who sells parts told me that there's basically nothing you can do to improve the situation.
I swabbed them with goof off and it helps for a while but the sticky goo eventually returns. They are all like someone spilled a sugary soft drink on them. Goof off is pretty aggressive stuff so I don't want to use that again. Soap and water, formula 409, tuff stuff, etc don't do a thing. Does any one else have this problem and what has worked for you to fix it other than just accepting it?

I've had limited success with Windex. I just get a paper towel wet and softly rub until the grunge layer comes off. I tried spraying it directly on the switches on one of the cars and it just created a new layer of soft plastic.
The replacement window switches clean up better.

The entire interior of my '98 is just as you described. All of the switches/knobs have the sticky, peeling layer. Even the steering wheel gets a little sticky. I don't have a solution, but would be interested if someone did!

I took a facecloth and hot soapy water to my steering wheel and it unstickied it pretty well. They get very grungy. My replacement window switch, cheap ebay sourced came with hard plastic buttons and feels 100% better than the original. The rest of the switches, especially the ecc unit are still pretty bad but I do have a replacement ecc to install and it has good switches.

Like rmmagow, I have cleaned them periodically with mild soapy water and followed up with a clean water wipe down. They seem to have finally given up and stabilized now that I have convinced my wife not to apply hand lotion while in the car--and no snacking either.
