One of the headlights on my wagon had moisture in it when I bought the car several years ago. It must have been in there for quite a while b/c the reflective surface is yellowed out.
I have a replacement and want to put the lens back on so it won't leak.
I've been searching and found a couple of Permatex products "Super Tack" that doesn't harden, and a similar number "Tack and Seal" that specifies that can be easily disassembled, which I'd like.
Now I have another idea: What if I wrap the rubber Volvo seal (which is still in good condition) in Teflon tape? Post your yea or nay as to whether this might keep moisture out, with the OEM clips replaced, of course. I have both the yellow and white kinds.
OR...
What kind of sealant would you use on both sides of the rubber seal—that could be disassembled if necessary?
96 855 how to seal moisture out of headlights?

If the seal is in good shape I haven't had any problems unless a rock pops a hole in the glass. Make sure that you have all of the retainer clips installed.

As Lee had mentioned, I have replaced the big glass on my '93 with good rubber. Also the Alter II on my '96 as you speak of.
I believe the original seal with the OEM glass comes from Hella, and/or Valeo.
Either way, the OEM seals seem to be flawless when not dry rotted.
All of mine were salvage pieces, not a drop of moisture.
The aftermarket, $50. Units are worthless.
I am not sold on the Teflon tape idea, and not sure how to make that look correct,.
My .02 cents for what it is worth.
Edit: $3.95 per lens, with gasket and clips. How can you not like that?

I would get the Volvo seal and make sure the lens to housing is clean first. Nothing beats an original seal in my opinion. Clean the inside of the lens but be careful with the reflector tho. Cheers Steve.
