Headlights moisture/condensation help needed?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Headlights moisture/condensation help needed?

Post by Volvo S80 »

I have a Volvo S80 1999, when I drive the car on cold temperatures below 0 degree Celsius to around 10 degree Celsius and there is no rain/snow or water on the ground I see that the headlights start to create moisture or condensation. Today I checked the projectors for any cracks or what so ever and I noticed two holes on both headlights which you can see on the pictures below. I am suspecting that previous owner installed some stupid aftermarket led`s which failed after a week and destroyed the headlights for no reason. Can anybody check your headlights do they have this holes, are they factory to allow air circulation and do your headlights create any source of moisture like this?

Thank you for your time and opinions.

Over a month ago after rain I had the droplets inside the headlight too. So first I used compress air to blow away any loose dirt out from the top side groove where the glass lens and plastic housing join, I spray the adhesive glue which I got from Homedepot to seal the leak, then I remove the cap behind high beam light bulb. I drove to work and back home for several days and the droplets was gone, because the heat generate by light bulb evaporate the moisture out of head light housing. I re-install the cap back, since then I do not have any more condensation even after a rain fall (knock on the wood). And the rectangular slot in the reflector is original from factory,I had it in mine too.Hope this helps...

Thank you for your opinions, I will remove the headlights from the car and remove the glass, than clean them inside, and seal with heat resistant silicone and see what happens.

On the S60 and V70 the issue is with the sealant that runs all along the top portion of the headlight. Put outdoor silicone over the sealant on both headlights and no more moisture.

I have removed headlights from the car and the place where the condensation is formed it has a tube to vent the unit.
if I close that tube what can happen?
I also have opened units and cleaned the glass and lens, there seems to be a good seal on edges but just in case I have put some silicone over the edges.
