1998 s90 I like to punish my self!

Post by Jesse8931 »

So I never posted it here but I bought a 98 s90 with the timing belt blown apart for a 100 bucks.
Once I got into the engine I found out it needed a new engine. I then ran into lack of funds so I sold the car for 1k.

Well that was about a year ago and I have missed that car so while browsing cl I find another 98 s90 with a trans issue.

The lady who is selling it told me her mother bought it new and then last year gave it to her daughter and bought a new volvo.

They said they took it to a mechanic and he claimed it needed a new trans and she says you can not drive it very fast.

I'm hoping its just a pnp switch however if the trans is truly dead I can get one with a 1 year warranty for 450.

I wish I didn't see this :-( I have a weakness for unloved, cranky old sedans. I drove 88~89 Mazda 929's for more than 25 years and really liked the old beasts. When my last one died I started my current run with Volvo which is probably my last line of cars. I'm going to see what I can stumble across in this S90 model, might be fun to find another line of old sedans to play with. Still plan to stick to my V70 line for day-to-day though.

The straight six is silky smooooooth. Some earlier cams will revive the 150KW output of the 92-94 series 960. When the straight six is howling at 4.5k-5.5k rpm nothing sounds quite like it. :)
The AW-341E (known as a AW30-42LE) adapted transmission is robust and shifts like a Lexus. Wait a minute, the transmission IS from a Lexus!!

Ok so i picked the car up and it throws a p0470 code and the trans fluid is black as can be.

So the plan is to do a filter and fluid change and see where we are at.

If you can't find a cheap Volvo transmission you CAN adapt the Toyota/Lexus trans to the 960/S90.

I did this last year however we swapped the pump/first gear clutch pack (behind the torque converter) as well as the rear extension housing and had to convert the selector to right hand operation.

Do you know if I can use a 96 960 trans in my 98 s90 ?

An S90/V90 is pretty much a 95-97 960. Mechanically identical

I can get a 960 trans with 125k for 90 bucks or a unknown mileage s90 trans with 1 year warranty for 450.

You could probably have one rebuilt for not much more than 450, so I'd spend the $90, if the fluid is clean.

Don't bother with a cam swap, the car will become excessively thirtsy, and lose low end torque. Ask me how I know.
