98 volvo C70 T5 2.3 won't start

Post by Ovlov98 »

Hi, while driving the last couple weeks I noticed a big lack in power, sluggish performance and stall outs. The last time it would not restart and had to get towed home. Had two codes come up;
1) Throttle posistion sensor
2) secondary air injection malfunction

Doing some basic checks I found that I only had 10 psi or less fuel pressure at the rail with engine not running, after a couple minutes I have zero psi. Having over 170k miles I changed the fuel pump, filter, FPR and fuel pump relay. Found cracked distributor cap. Replaced cap, rotor, wires and plugs. All of these things were overdue for replacement except the FPR. Now while cranking I have great fuel pressure, but soon after psi goes to zero again, I can't find any fuel leaks nor can I hear and vacume leaks. Check valve on the fuel pump bad? Clamped off return line with no change in loss of pressure. After the car sits over nite It will fire for a sec then shuts off and cranks only. Does my bleeding fuel pressure have anything to do with the two codes that came up, and could either of these cause a non start issue as described? Throttle posistion sensor will be replaced soon as it arrives and I was kinda holding off on the other till I learn more about it, Having read the secondary system can be disabled as it is costly although the valve to the real of the engine is probably contaminated thus causing problems and needing replaced. I really don't have the $$ to replace things that may not be the problem. I have nice hot spark everywhere, checked for gremlims on the cam and crank sensor, and timing is on. Injectors pulsing, "O" rings good with no leaks. Pulse dampner on rail not leaking...Where is my fuel pressure going? Hind site, I probably did not need a new fuel pump or FPR. I hope somebody can offer some info or direction before I go broke. Thank You for your time and for having me on your forum.

Thats a great troubleshooting vid, ThankYou. Unfortunately, Im still have the same result as the day it stopped. I really believe that I overlooked something, so today I will recheck the main systems. . I read that if you have good spark at the plugs then you can rule out cam and crank sensors, is this true or maybe I should take a closer look? I have always considered myself a decent shade mechanic but must admit volvo's are a bit complex. I have checked the secondary injection system noting the pump works fine and the valve to the rear of the engine was quite clean without corrosion. I Have to charge the battery a bit then have take a small video to upload, maybe someone can see what I don't. The engine will not start with starting fluid either. It will fire briefly for a split second and wont fire again till the car has sat over nite. Im thinking I have a ecm problem but again I dont wanna throw good money after bad.. Lost here in Pa. Do I need to plan a funeral for my beloved car yet. Thankyou for your time fellows.

I would like to appologize for my ignorance which I have no excuse. I "just" read "Draft p80 Master Volvo No-Start flow chart" so I am sorry for wasting anyones time asking stupid questions out of order. I get it now. Clear thoughts prevale. Where is the go-jo? I will report back with findings.

Spark= not blue but yellow, orange and white
Fuel= 46 psi at rail and injectors are firing
Compression= 165, 172, 170, 165, 175

codes read= Tps and secondary inject system malfunction

Parts changed
fuel pump
fuel filter
FPR
plugs
cap rotor wires
TPS
cam sensor
crank sensor
fuel pressure relay
Maf

All other fuses and relays were tested out good, all ground straps cleaned and in good working condition. all battery cables checked for voltage, cleaned. Starter leads tight and clean. Timing is on and belt in good condition. Great fuel pressure but does bleed to just a few psi after setting for a while. Replaced all worn out airlines/hoses for vaccume leaks. secondary pump working fine along with good clean valve(no corrosion or contamination) Pvc system in ok condition. I havent changed the air in the tires yet.

Results: Cranks good, good everything with same results. Briefly fires on first try after sitting then dies. I am completely lost and really need advice.

Have you pulled all of your intake tubes to see if any are torn or loose?

Yes all appear to be in good condition, would a non blue spark be indicative of a weak coil?

Have you tried running it on starting fluid ? That will tell you for sure if you have a fuel issue or not. It definitely shouldnt drop to zero fuel pressure that quickly. I know the hose going from the fuel pump to the fuel pump assy can come loose. I had this happen once with my car and would lose pressure after shutting off but the car still ran.

We recently had a "no start, had spark" thread that was solved with new coil. I think I would try that.
I havent changed the air in the tires yet.
