It is beginning to look like I may need a new trans. for my '00 v70 xc. Any opinions on buying used, rebuilding, as options instead of new??

I've just lost my transmission @ 70,000 mi. When did you lose yours?

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT rebuild what you've got. Go with a warrantied used. My suggestion erievovo.com They ship, they stand behind it & it'll cost you way less.
