Post by superfeed »

I am going to swap in a much lower mileage engine into my V70 XC. Wow, a lot of stuff in this little compartment!
So....
Out the top or bottom?

With transmission attached or without?

Any advice.... PLEASE!!!

Thanks!!!!

I prefer remove from bottom, with the turbo, sub frame and trans still attach to the engine.

I don't have experience with the AWDs and you may want to hear some posts from someone who clearly states they do, it is pretty different from a FWD. I like to take those out the top, everything still attached, it is pretty darn easy that way when you are working in a home garage. But that's not AWD ... wish I knew more!

It largely depends on what you have available to you. With a lift the bottom is the way to go but I did just fine coming out the top, with the transmission but not the transfer case, using an engine hoist.

If you try to pull just the engine you need to drop the subframe halfway off to get the transmission disconnected so it is actually considerably more work than just taking them out together.

Much Love, Good Volvo People,
Can I put the wheels on and move the car around if I take the front axle shafts out?

You can, but not recommend. The bearings can come apart with nothing bolted it down.

I've rolled it back and forth a few feet a couple times, but always afraid to do more than that. It helps a lot that there is so little weight on the front of the car with everything removed. You can get car dollies at Harbor Freight etc., set the front wheels on them, they have different styles for different prices e.g. http://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-ve ... 67511.html

Those are cool. Might just do the trick. to get the front wheel shafts out, I'm looking at the calipers, axle nut, rotor, and lower ball joint? This 36mm axle nut is on very tight. I have sprayed penetrant on it but I'm a little afraid to brake my big 1/2" ratchet. I've put my full weight on it but still holding fast...
