96 volvo 850R Not understanding volvo diagnostic chart

Post by phils94850 »

Im tryng to figure out why my cruise control isnt working and ive been following the Volvo repair manual and im confused. Here is an example of one of the tests which doesnt make sense to me. It say to check for 12 volts and then says if 12 volts present its a bad switch. I understand your checking for 12volts at the wiring harness at the switch and then your checking for 12volts where the CC module plugs in. I guess im confused... wouldnt you want 12v when you press the SET+ at the CC module 4T ? It seems like these two paragrahs contradict eachother...

. See SELECTOR SWITCH TEST (RESPONSE CODE 1-1-3). If test
verifies cruise control switch is okay, connect voltmeter (backprobe)
between cruise control selector switch connector terminal No. 5
(Red/Black wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. Press SET+ button. If
battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not
present, replace selector switch.
2) Remove cruise control unit from underhood fuse and relay
center. See
Fig. 3
. Connect voltmeter between ground and cruise
control unit base terminal 4T. Turn ignition on. Set cruise control
selector switch to ON position. Press SET+ button. If voltmeter
indicates battery voltage, replace cruise control selector switch. If
voltmeter does not indicate battery voltage, check wiring between
selector switch connector terminal No. 5 (Red/Black wire) and cruise
control unit terminal 4T.

From the schematic there should be battery voltage on pin 4T only when the + button on the stalk is being depressed but not there if the button is not being depressed.

Most cruise problems are caused by a rotted vacuum line from the pump to the accelerator bellows.

thanks Lee... i used a jumper wire per the repair manual and activated the CC pump and my pedal pulls down and holds and if i press the brake it releases so i dont think i have any vacuum line issues. I think i have constant voltage going to the 4T terminal so i guess i have a bad selector switch, i just dont understand the part about ... (Press SET+ button. If voltmeter
indicates battery voltage, replace cruise control selector switch) its saying at terminal 4T to when you press the + on the selector and you get voltage there your suppose to replace the selector switch ? I thought you should get voltage there when pressing it.. thats whats confusing me..
