AW50-42LE P0730 (still0 after c1-c2 Drum and valve replaced

Post by Turbonic77 »

Hello,
Firstly I must explain that the gearbox above is in a SAAB 93 Aero (2001) however i have been unable to gleen any insight in the SAAB forums.

Basically: car bought exhibiting P0730, with me thinking that it was a duff transmission input/output speed sensor - referred to as Original Trans.

Secondhand box bought and stripped, with speed sensors, C1-C2 Drum and clutches, and valve body to be used in "original trans"

Original trans remained on car but valve body, solenoids and C1-C2 drum replaced, speed sensors used from new trans, - used "original trans" end cover.

Bolted all back together, replaced fluids and drove. annnd problem (P0730) is still there.

Symptoms:
Vehicle will drive fine, however will not "lockup" and generates the P0730 code. Give it a bootfull and it will go through the gears fine, untill it needs to "change up" to top, and it bounces off the rev limiter! Code returns P0730.

Possibilities:
I have obviously done a bit of reading and a lot of thought about the issue and have the following thoughts/findings:

Original Trans C1-C2 Drum clutches looked fine and unburned, however the sealing ring on the end opposite the torque converter, is split - is this normal?

As I have replaced the C1-C2 Drum, and solenoids, could the issue be with the seals on the end plate/or the accumulator which is part of the end plate which I used from the "original trans"

As I am not sure if SAAB is a dirty word around here, I thought I'd give it a tray in any case, however this is driving me insane!

Do you know what kind of Transmission Control Module SAAB uses? While the transmissions themselves should be pretty much the same the controls are likely different and I don't know what kind of diagnostics you can get out of a SAAB beyond a P code reader. My bet is that you could get deeper into troubleshooting it with an ELM327 based reader or a VAG-COM based reader but I don't know what the commands would be. If the TCU is the same as a Volvo then one would presume the diagnostic instruction set would be the same.

Once Volvo went beyond 1999 the diagnostics available got complicated and to get very deep it takes a specialized interface but on the older, pre-99 versions, you could test individual solenoid actuations with VAG-COM.

We have a member here that is top flight on the command and query strings for the ELM327 and he has worked extensively with the guy that runs this web page.

There might be some nuggets there that you could use.

Thanks for the reply. I was lucky enough to be using a Bosch KTS tool which read the codes, however it did not have any routines to run to actuate the individual solenoids. I do also have an ELM device and the spec for its commands so will delve into the supplied links.

I dropped the fluid, and dug around in the gearboxs again this weekend, this time replacing the end cover to the one from the "new" trans, thinking it could have been the C1 accumulator, or seals in/on the end plate. Nope, P0730 which is a pain.

I have therefore decided that I shall have to pay to get the whole unit removed and replaced inc torque converter. Bum.

Would really annoy me if the fault still persisted.

Thanks,
Nic
