Ive been having a issue with low boost. I have a chipped ecu which should be boosting around 15lbs. I have changed the BCS, CBV, pulled the hose off the wastegate and only get about 9lbs. Heres whats odd.. I can tighten the wastegate arm down about 5 turns and it will boost 14lbs.

I took the exhaust side off the turbo and looked at the wastegate door and it seems loose and doesn't seal properly unless I pull it tight against the housing which explains me having to tighten it down witht the adjustment rod. Here is a video.. what do you guys think ?? is this common or is there a fix ??

That's normal. Just keep the wastegate rod tight.

Your turbine wheel is wet with oil. Make sure your PCV system is new and the catalytic converter is not clogged. Or else your turbo will be smoking very soon.

tryingbe... I don't know if you noticed in the video.. the flapper would lift up a little then seal shut. I have to keep the rod turned in like 5 turns to build the boost it should 15lbs. so its gotta be leaking there, ive tried everything else including pressurizing the system for a boost leak. I don't think I should have to turn the rod that much to make it seal unless there is a problem...

Hi Phil,

Its ok for them to be a little loose but they need to seat every time. If you can open the wastegate and then shut it without it going into its seat then its time to grab another turbo.

If it hits its seat reliably then you can use some vale lapping compound to clean up the seat.

Remember that the sealing force is based on the spring in the wastegate. If you are having to tighten up too much perhaps the spring is ready to retire. Lots of cars in the junkyards these days if you need parts but I like fresh wastegate actuators in mine if the turbo internals ( wastegate included) are tight and not worn. If you have excessive play in the wastegate rod that goes from the outside to the inside of the turbo you should take it to a machine shop or grab one in better condition.

Best Wishes,
John

thanks or the reply john... I think the problem is as you can see in the video the wastegate isn't sealing properly when it closes is reason why I have to tighten down so much to make it pull shut. I don't think its a problem with the wastegate spring, this is the second wastegate I put on and the spring is stronger in this one. I guess im gonna have to clean up the seat or get another turbo..

Guys ... as you will recall that v-band clamp comes off pretty easily. That is, the wastegate is not part of the turbo, it is part of the exhaust flange.

It is much cheaper to replace the exhaust flange than the turbo.

Erik is right.
That's why a machine shop can come in handy. Tell them you want it to seat every time and they will put in a stainless steel bushing and a height control washer or nut on the shaft.

I purchased one of those flanges for $12 I think. They are a dime a dozen at the salvage yards.

As for my issue, I think my turbo may be getting weak. It may be spooling up to 80% instead of 100%. I can hear it more now that a year ago.

Seen a new show at the Pull A Part today and couldn't find any reason it showed up to the jy until I started to pull what looked to be a new wastegate. It was nice and clean, but blown. It didn't pull vacuum and banged in the back end of it like the diaphragm was blown. My guess is that they were over boosting and blew the motor's internals. :?
