2000 V70XC Interesting coolant leak

Post by LeBryan »

Good morning Everyone,

I am currently a little puzzled with my wifes car, 2000 V70 XC, 152000+ miles. There is a small coolant leak on the right side/behind the lower right engine mount. When driving long distances it does not leak, however, after 3-4 weeks of shorter trips in town it starts leaking again. The area below the crank pulley is dry as is the oil cooler. Also the area above the engine mount is dry. I noticed there is a metal tube behind the right engine mount, however, isn't this a fuel line? Any suggestions where to look?

Thanks,
A Dutchman in Michigan.

My wife's C70 did this before the water pump seized up and took the timing belt with it, killing the engine. It didn't leak much. In fact we rarely saw any coolant, but I often detected a mild coolant smell, and we had to add coolant every few weeks. I think the cheapo water pump I installed when I did the timing belt at 125K started going around 180K and I neglected it until 200K when it killed the car. The coolant pump is run by the timing belt and any leakage would drip down inside the timing belt cover on the right side of the engine. I would open up the timing belt cover and take a look. Don't suffer the same fate as my wife. Now she has to drive a 2004 C70 instead!

I agree.. probably a good idea to remove the timing cover and take a look at the waterpump..

Good idea! I thought about it actually. I will take the timing belt cover of, that is a pretty straight forward job. I am working on the car this weekend anyway (replacing both rear brake hoses). A new water pump is quite a bit cheaper then a new/another car!!

I could be wrong about this, but I do recall reading here about a weep hole in the actual waterpump which, if leaking coolant is a bad sign -- one that the waterpump is about to give up the ghost. Might be worth searching MVS for further details since I have no personal experience with this, but could swear I've read about it here.
