2000 V70 non-turbo P1118 code

Post by estrekal »

Hello everyone,
This is my first post on the forum. I'm a former Saab owner, so it seems I used to post on Saab boards on a weekly basis. Anyway, I've had my V70 now for about a year. The previous owner took very good care of the vehicle and provided me with most maintenance records from the last 10 years. The car is a non-turbo and has about 188,000 miles on it. All of the major preventative maintenance was done on the car in the last 10,000-15,000 miles.

Over the last couple of months I've had the check engine light come a few times. Usually after a day or two it will then turn off. The car is running fine, no stumbling or hesitation. I had the codes pulled a few weeks back and it came up with a P1118, which I believe is Mass Or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input (Bank 2). Unfortunately I don't actually know what that means or what it's referring to.

A few things I've tried so far: I've cleaned the MAF a few times and that usually seems to fix it for a time. I recently pulled the ETM and cleaned it out real good. It is a yellow label so I know it was replaced at some point. I checked the gas cap, it's good. I've also checked my vacuum lines on the intake manifold, nothing seems to be leaking. The light has been on now for four days and I don't see it going away anytime soon. Perhaps I should go have the codes read again to see if something else has materialized in addition to the P1118. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Is there something else I could check and/or replace? I appreciate any and all advice or suggestions. Thank you!

If you search the "P1118" it will jump you to things like this https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 18#p244328
From there you can kind of search around.

I've googled the code, all that usually comes up is the post you mentioned and one other one from a Volvo forum. On that one the guy mentions the P1118 in correlation with some other code. All the other results are usually listings of code numbers and descriptions.

In the link you provided the guy mentions a sensor near the throttle body, I'm not sure if I have any sensors near the throttle body. He might be referring to the turbo models. I haven't found any air intake temp sensors for this model. On the turbo models there is one in the intercooler that I know of. On my intake hose there is some sort of sensor just down from the MAF, I wonder if that's it?

This is quite a mystery for me, one I'd like to figure out before I have to smog the car next month.

Okay so had the codes pulled again and four came up. The guy didn't write them down for me so I'm trying to remember what they were. I got the P1118 again, a P0171 System too Rich (Bank 1), a P1101 MAF Out Of Range, and I'm not sure what the fourth one though, maybe another one with the MAF.

As I said before, car seems to be running fine and the gas mileage doesn't seem to be affected. It seems I may have a faulty sensor somewhere, but I'm not sure which one it might be. I've read that these codes usually come in pairs like this. It does sound like something with my intake system.

So after the codes were pulled the check engine light is off. I'd imagine the codes are stored. Anyway it was strange when I started the car to leave it didn't fire on the first attempt, which was weird, that's never happened before. It started right up the second time though.

Has anyone else had anything similar occur? If I have to start replacing sensors, I'm not sure if a $2500 car is worth pouring too much money into.

I'd say MAF or front O2 sensor. Do you have a friend with a P80 Volvo you can swap in a "known good" MAF, to test?

I've played the Front O2 Sensor Game twice in my 14 years of 850 (one car) ownership. It goes like this:

_mpg suffers
_CE light triggered by a P0171
_I try various things
_continued mpg suffering, P0171
_change sensor
_fixed

My 2¢.

Matthew,
Thanks for the reply. I might know a guy with one. I will certainly look into it. I will also keep an eye on those mpgs to see if they start to decrease. As far as I can tell now the performance isn't suffering at all, acceleration is good, and idle stable. These sensors are always tricky, you never quite know which one to tackle. Again, I appreciate the advice. Thank you!

Yeah. Sometimes it feel like we are chasing our tails "trying" to figure out what is happening and then it happens....the ah ha moment when it was right there all along in front of you.

Keep plugging away...also it might be worth using the link to Amazon through MVS to purchase an OBD scanner for your own. I've got one in eAch car. You can pick them up fairly cheap.
