2006 V50, Things to look out for?

Post by dgd81 »

Hi all, I'm a long time Volvo owner and occasional lurker here on the forums. This is my first post.

I'm looking to replace my '99 V70XC and recently drove a 2006 V50 T5 AWD. It's a 6 speed manual with just under 103K. It's a one owner vehicle, has mostly been serviced at the local dealer, and my first impression driving it was that it seems very solid. I will be taking it to an independent mechanic in a couple of days to get checked out, at which point I will also take a look at service records.

So far I know that the clutch and master cylinder have been replaced recently. I wondered if anyone on here could suggest particular things that might be coming due at that mileage/age, or anything else the mechanic should give special attention to.

I'd also welcome any other comments/thoughts that might help me reach a decision as to whether this is the car for me. Thanks in advance!

Dave

I purchased a single owner 05 V50 T5 FWD, 94,000 miles. Good car with typical Volvo issues, as follows:

1.) Ignition Switch / Start Control Module (Had key immobilizer error and started irregular. Self repair, no software or key update necessary).
2.) Fuel pressure sensor (Car would cut out and buck on the highway, self repair).
3.) Power lock failure, rear driver side (Spring was broken in the actuator, self repair).
4.) Front wheel bearing assembly (shop repair).
5.) Replaced horns (1 of 2 were bad, so replaced both, self repair).
6.) Brake pads and rotors (self repair).
7.) Parking brake cable was rusted shut (Haven't fixed this one yet).
8.) License plate lights corroded and replaced (self repair).
9.) New battery (self repair).
10.) Timing belt (shop repair).
11.) Transmission fluid change (shop repair).
Most repairs can be found on the Volvo forum. Parts can be found at Tasca auto parts or IPD usa.

Thanks Reinie. I had the car into the shop yesterday. Mechanic said it seems to be in very good shape but does need a bit of work, most notably the right rear wheel bearing/hub assembly. Everything else is just normal maintenance stuff I assume the owner either wasn't aware was due or put off since he's selling anyway. Now I'm just trying to figure out what to offer.

You have AWD, so I would imagine the rear wheel bearing assembly is similar to the front ($400 +/-). Did your mechanic scan the car with a Volvo scan tool (VIDA)? My mechanic hooks that thing up and spits out $5,000 of repair recommendations, then graciously prioritizes them for me...

I don't believe it was scanned. This was not a Volvo specialist, just a reputable mechanic near where the seller lives, an hour from my home. We have a great Volvo shop up here, The Swedish Pit, but didn't seem worth the two hour round trip twice in one day.

Purchased mine at 90,000 miles and had it diagnosed with Volvo VIDA. Had 3 active codes (ignition switch SCU, fuel pressure sensor, and bad door lock). Also had 41 non-active codes (still pairing through these). Mechanic said the vehicle likely had never been scanned by the previous owner. Pretty sure the "autozone scanners" will not show this type of history for Volvos.
