95 850t Starting issues

Post by iruleyounow »

Everyday, cold warm or hot, the car takes about 3-5 seconds to start. I feel like I have to hold the key forever just so it starts. It always starts up for me, I just don't understand why it takes so long.

New head gasket, all new tune up parts, new pcv system. New battery and had the alternator/starter checked. Only thing I haven't addressed is the fuel filter. Its not horribly bad but I know it needs changed.

Do these cars usually take that long to turn over?

Any suggestions as to why it always takes so long? I never have to turn the key more than once to start it.

Any codes from part A-2?

Does the temp gauge read normally?

A couple of things that can cause hard starting are a bad check valve in the fuel pump and, in some circumstances, a dirty IAC valve. Check for codes first. Your car can post error codes even though a CEL isn't triggered.

No codes stored at all. No CEL. Everything reads normal. I have not cleaned the IAC valve.

If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge you can read the fuel pressure with the car running and then observe the pressure after the engine is shut off. The system should hold pressure - not full operating pressure but somewhere around 30 PSI for 20 or 30 minutes.

If the pressure quickly falls to zero it would indicate a bad check valve in the fuel pump housing and that will cause hard starting.

Is it taking a while to start cranking or does it crank immediately and takes a few seconds to start running?

It cranks immediately but just takes about 5 seconds to start. Almost like when you have a weak battery.

I don't have one but I'm sure I can find one. I know there's two pumps. How would I know which one to change out if that is the issue

On an 850 (FWD) there is only one pump, it is accessed behind the right hand rear seat. Unfortunately, if that is the problem, you can't just change the insert with a Walbro or another Bosch since the check valve is built into the plastic housing which means an entirely new assembly.

It is actually just a tad easier to change the assembly than it is to install a new pump cartridge in the old housing but it is tougher on the wallet.

So, are you saying that cranking is slow at first, then speeds up?
