2005 S40 T5 AWD problems

Post by davisjd77 »

I've read a million post on AWD problems and most of them lead to the bevel/angle gear or the coupling between the transmission and the gear. My question is, if the bevel gear or the coupling were bad then I should be hearing a noise and if I'm correct about how the gear works then I should only have driver side front tire spin if the gear or coupling are bad, unless of course the gear that powers the rear drive shaft is bad. I should be able to rule that out if I spin the drive shaft and I can get movement from my front tires. When I was driving this morning in the snow I did have some stability indications, does this rule out the speed sensor? What can the issue possibly be??? Please help. Thank you

Why do you feel or think the angle gear is bad? Any oil leak?
How many miles on your S40?

I don't think the angle gear is bad, I think I can rule the gear out based on traction from both front wheels. I'm looking for other possible reasons why the rear tires will not engage.

The car has 145k on it now.

That you have front tire traction does not mean angle gear is OK. The RH axle passes through it with no connection. The angle gear connects to the differential/final drive case inside the transaxle. The sleeve can be stripped and not make any noise also.
