06 S60R Ft. Spoiler(Lip\Winglet) damaged need to remove

Post by SSR »

Better half caught a chunk of Ice and the OE styling spoiler needs to come off to be repaired or replaced. It appears to be held on with some kind of plastic rivet. I'd like to not add to the damage, how to these fasteners come off?

Thanks!

I believe you're going to need to drill through the middle of the rivet. Volvo can get your replacements if you're interested in OE... but basic rivets will work too. I put some beafier rivets into mine when re-installing.

These winglets are a PITA, no doubt. But they look great. Many owners try a myriad of different attachments.... but I stick with the 3M double-sided sticky tape (get the good stuff, not the cheap stuff) and the rivets. Use a heat gun to warm the bumper, and the winglet, as you apply the tape, and then warm it as you're applying it.

Hope that helps.

Drilled the rivets and fought the adhesive one down! :D
Wonder what will remove the remaining adhesive while leaving the paint...

Thank You for the tip!

GooGone breaks it up a bit.... but what always works for me is just get a dry rag, and rub it... it'll start to curl up on itself and you just push it off.

Yes, tedious.... but at least it's small enough area.

I tried working on it like you describe and shortly gave up and went to the local NAPA, picked up a quart of "3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner" $20.00. I also cut a piece of pine to use as a scraper.
Liberally coating the tape residue letting it sit for a few minutes and then scraping it with the wood block quickly removed the goo, didn't hurt the paint at all and didn't even touch the three globs of hard black rubber that space and also hold the Winglet on. I carefully cut off them off with a razor blade and the whole area will be covered up when I decide what to do permanently this spring.
Two side notes:
My wife actually noticed a change in the cars handling after the Windlets were removed.
I discovered that the plastic covers on the fog lights are missing and the wiring broken and... ah... Shambolised , ya that's it completely shambolised! Now to find two new back covers and then rebuild the wiring.
