If the transmission is working properly, a complete home flush (as opposed to having it flushed with a machine) by the upper radiator cooling hole followed necessarily by a transmission software reset to 'new fluid' should do well. Match well the removed fluid quantity with the added fluid quantity.

Translation:
Multiple drain and fills (use at least 12 quarts), then have the adaptions and fluid counters reset.
(VIDA or your dealer if you don't have a VIDA DICE unit)
Also a new drive cycle would be needed at that time

What happen if one does not reset adaptation/fluid counter and set new drive cycle? I do a complete drain and fill every 60k but haven't done the aforementioned. Due for another d&f in 5k miles.

I did not reset anything on my s60, bought it a few yrs back with 50k miles and did multiple drain and fills. Planning for that every 30k miles just as with my other vehicles. Tranny shifts like new. Adaptive controls, such as this tranny has, adapt to new conditions, driving habits, etc. The adaptation process works both ways, I have yet to see a reasonable explanation why it would adapt to worn fluid and not to new fluid. It is useful of course to do a forced adaptation in a critical case such as an overhaul, etc to avoid harsh operation on a fresh tranny. Now , these are controversial opinions and will draw some interesting comments.

You really need to especially at those high miles
DO NOT think you can "get away with" not resetting it, it could make your day with a failure

Be careful flushing high mileage transmissions do a gradual drain and fill 3qts no more.. drive 5K 3qts again. I speak from experience 21+ years at Volvo dealer just last week condemned an S60 with 120k they had the Ford dealer that sold them car, flush it for them, just for shift flare...now they have permanent shift quality dtc's and trans service message in DIM.... only choice now is a new or rebuilt box...I've seen this scenario played out over and over...

thanks for the added input. looks like a gradual drain & fill is the cautious course.
with that, can i use a scanner to reset the tcm or must it be vida?
