What is the easiest way to remove the air filter box? It seems it needs to be removed to access the removal of the distributor cap and rotor.

Yes, the air filter box needs to come out. I don't know what car you're referring to, but on an S70 with a turbo:

1. remove the top of the air box by either removing the hose by the MAF or removing the torx screws holding the MAF to the air box and pulling the MAF housing out of the air box top. (I usually take out the torx screws because it's too hard to remove the plastic hose) Also remove the hose to the air pump (if you have one) and the coil wire from it routing points along the side of the air box.
2. remove the bottom of the air box - on the right side of the box there's a vacuum controlled thingy (sorry I can't think what it is off the top of my head) remove it by pushing a catch on the underside. Remove the fresh air input hose. The box is mounted by two compression mountings on the bottom and a single pin going into the inner fender well. Spray the two bottom mounts with WD40 and give the box a yank pulling the end closest to the engine straight up.
