96 850 GLT Front Wheel well liner

Post by joe_pinehill »

Are the liners in the front riveted in? I know on the right side, a couple screw/fasteners allow you to fold the flap back to access the crank pulley. I wanted to fold the left side back, to access the carbon filter, but it looks like its riveted on. Are they common blind rivets?

I found one post that talks about pop rivets. I guess simply drill out and replace with common steel pop rivets?

You have to drill them out, or just pry a bit with a screwdriver then nip them off. I have also used those push-in plastic fasteners as a replacement, they are very easy to use and work great.

I like the idea of the push in plastic retainers, less chance of corrosion. I'll look for thin retainers at NAPA.

Use aluminum pop rivets with washers, or Volvo makes aluminum pop rivets with black plastic heads for the wheel liners.

I would have thought the OEM rivets would be stainless. Aluminum rivets into steel can cause galvanic corrosion. A wheel well is a hard environment, wet, salty.

Good point, but they are aluminum. I've drilled out and replaced them several times in the last few years without problems. Half of the rivets go into the front and rear bumper covers.

Yes, that is one of the few areas I have seen, and repaired rust on 850 fenders for my cars.

I still use those rivets though to attach the front mud flaps.
Bumper cover is not metal, so sometimes those nylon push pins work better.

Rear mud flaps suggest bolts.

Rear liner with a combination of bolts and rivets. The way I had done it anyway.

Fun.

thanks for the photos. Rather than drilling out, I was thinking of carefully grinding the head of the rivet with my Fordom tool and carbide cutter. I have better control with the Fordam.
