1999 V70XC Transfer case removal

Post by 2JUNEJUNE »

Please find time to answer my question... I have a 1999 V7XC. Can I eliminate the transfer case and use a FWD axle? Do I need to remove also the protruding cylindrical piece at the passenger side of the transmission which is present when you detached the transfer case? Thank you.

Not really.

The collar that goes between the transmission and the transfer case is a seal surface and it must remain in place to seal the transmission. If you were able to fabricate something to hold the collar in place you could remove the transfer case and even use your old axle. Without something to hold it in place the collar would simply fall off and all of the transmission fluid would wind up on the ground.

Someone clever really needs to come up with a block off plate the incorporates the collar or - even easier - a collar retainer that would set screw onto the axle. It would be really easy to make but it would take someone with a metal lathe.

I have a lathe and can fabricate something, but I haven't really looked at the design. Would this be a retainer type thing that holds the collar in place so it doesn't slide out when the BG is gone?

My understanding is that: the right axle passes through the Transfer Case.

So if the collar is stripped or the angle gear is bad, you can convert to FWD by:
- Removing the center driveshaft (that goes from TC to the Rear Diff)
- Since the Right Axle passes directly through the TC, you will be running on only 2 FRONT wheels.

That is pretty much correct unless you have a situation like Robert's where the angle gear itself, and/or its housing, are broken into pieces.

I found a suggestion on another site when I removed my gear case that used two worm gear clamps (hose clamps) connected together so the gear parts are opposite each other. The gear clamps are installed on the axle up against the collar. Sounds cheesy but it worked, didn't drip a drop for years. I inspected it a few times and found the clamps were slightly worn down on the edge where it touched the collar as the axle and the collar spin opposite to each other. I just put some grease on it.

Mine is a mess but I was able to get it running on 2WD. I had to tie the rear collar from the angle gear back against the exhaust, so the limp shaft flange wouldn't rest and spin on the steering rack.

Do you have any diagrams/pics of the drivetrain for the 1998 V70XC? I'm running on FWD right now on my '98 Volvo V70XC and I want some pictures and diagrams for reference as I'm getting ready to try to make this V70XC AWD again. Thanks.

I documented my removal here. I think that bracket is likely overkill, as there is no sign of that collar ever moving after it was bonded to the transmission with loctite. The install has 4-1/2 yrs, and over 60,000 miles on it now. I'm pretty sure the FWD axle will not fit due to interference with the collar.
