Told OBD II code was solenoid, not PNP!

Post by srnkanator »

I was the one with the PNP switch problem(I thought) I mentioned this morning. I took it to Volvos Only in Houston (anybody know the place?) and they told me the only code they got was for the solenoid and it wasn't worth replacing???? They said my transmission was dying and that if I replaced the solenoid it would only fail in a month or two! They said there was nothing I could do but wait till my transmission died! I find this hard to believe given the fact that my tranny has 63,000 easy miles on it, I just got it flushed 3 months ago, and it was pamperd at the dealership it was purchased from (momentum). Should I take it to the dealer and see what they tell me? What are my options now? The car is running fine by the way, and I thank "Made in Japan" for your input.

Definitely I would get a second opinion...at another dealer or a good volvo specialist indy shop. I've heard way too often stories like yours and then the car running another 100K+ miles without any issue.

You might try another trans flush. There may be some debris that is keeeping the sol from working that can be flushed out.

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

I'm taking it to the dealership tommorrow morning. I warmed it up before I drove it this morning but that first gear change from 1st to 2nd took longer than it should. After it did it once though there wasn't any problem after that. What should I expect to pay from the dealer if it is the solenoid?
