Volvo Repair Database 2007 XC90 "Read Assembly" ... $2,450 to fix it?

Our XC90 3.2 engine was in for an oil change and the service manager called and said there is a noisy bearing going out, and said it was the "Read Assembly"...that drives the oil pump and alternator...and some other mumbo jumbo... and said it would cost $2,450 to fix it. What is this thing that the service manager is talking about, and should it cost $2,450 to fix it???

Never heard of it, but based on a quick search, it does look like it is a pulley that attaches to this reed assembly. Not sure if the pulley itself is replaceable. Might be worth to take it to anothe shop to get a second opinion.

in the following link, look at the 7th photo. its the black pulley on the left side of the flywheel

Rear Engine Ancillary Drive, READ, is the gearbox on side of engine that links crankshaft to the camshat drive chain and drives the alternator and the serpentine belt that runs a/c compressor, water pump, and power steering pump.
The bearing will get worse and the metal coming from failing bearing can be damaging to the engine.

Do the V8 cars use anything like this? Just wondering if I should just trade it for a V8 model. My wife loves the thing. Or do the V8 engines have any weird problems that are crazy expensive to fix?

if you want something simple to fix, and reliable, go for a 2.5t model. V8 is good if you want the power.

You can get the 2.5t upto 2006.

I declined the work. The dealership delivered it back to my house. I can't hear what the technician was hearing. It sounds like a normal engine. It sounds just like it sounded when we bought the car 1 1/2 yrs ago (from them...).

there is a possibility that you bought it with the bearing already going out, but I doubt it since in 1 1/2 year the noise would become quite obvious.

if you are worried about it, take it to another shop and have them listen around that area to determine if it is really going out.

I actually happened to visit a local indie one day while he had a car apart to do this job. I was kind of astounded at the amount of work it took to get in there. And also kind of blown away that Volvo had decided something like this was acceptable - they really have abandoned any notion of making the cars easy to work on.

For what it's worth the indie mechanic I was visiting did mention that the owners of this particular car (XC60) had not been careful with their oil. He said any engine with this READ system needs high quality synthetic oil, good filters (i.e.: not FRAM) and careful attention to the correct viscosity and change interval.

It really seems that new engines are engineered to within an inch of their life, and synthetic oil may be the only way to save them, esp in North America where many places experience temperature extremes over the course of a year. Where I live in NB the temps regularly go down to -30C(-22F) in winter and close to +30C (90F) in summer with a few days of extremes beyond even those temps.
