98 v70 shock bumper replacement

Today while I wait for my new shocks and struts to arrive I decided the hit the shock fasteners with a good jolt of pb blaster. While I was under the car I noticed that bumpers inside my rear springs were just about completely shot. I'm going to order new ones, but I have no idea how to replace them. Something tells me it will be much easier if done at the same time as the shock replacement. Can anyone tell me how it's done so I can be sure to have the right tools on hand.

I've replaced the bump stops without removing the springs. In my case one of them had fallen off and was rattling around inside of the spring and the other one was just gone.

The replacements come with a push pin rivet to secure them through the upper hole and I used a breakover bar and an extension to use as a lever so as to sink the push pin in and secure the new stops. I pried it up using the spring itself as a fulcrum.

How the bump stops are retained is still a mystery to me. I appreciate the attempts to help me out but I don't understand how it works. Are the bump stops held in by one plastic pin and you have to remove the springs to get to it ....?

They are held in place by a single plastic rivet that expands when the center pin on the rivet is depressed. Pushing in the pin opens the fingers on the other side of the hole. They are easier to deal with when the spring is removed but I have been able to deal with them without removing the spring.

In my case I just dealt with the rubberized tip, the light colored part in the FCP picture, and didn't remove the upper part. The old pieces of the rivets that I punched out are still up in those cups that the stop mounts to but they don't seem to rattle, or at least I can't hear them over the other rattles.

This is what the mounting rivet looks like.

Thanks.... So let me make sure I understand how to do it without removing the spring. Do I have this right???????

1) One pin for each side - 2 total - maybe order an extra since they're cheap?

2) Destroy whats left of the old bump stop and pull it out in pieces through the spring... this looks like it will be easy based on the condition of the existing bump stops.

3 Remove the rivet by pushing the pin all the way through and the slipping the outer part of the rivet down out of the cup. I'd be a little concerned about breaking the plastic cup by forcing the pin through, but maybe I shouldnt worry about it. Also how to push the pin through ... screwdriver maybe???

4) Squeeze the new bump stop flat and slip it through the coils of the spring

5) install the new pin. This part doesn't sound so easy. I guess I could take a piece of 1/2 flexible PVC pipe and tape the pin to the pipe. I don't have any real good ideas about EASILY pushing the pin in. Sorry ... I didn't remember that you already answered this one. I could see that what you described would work ... sounds a little challenging though.

Any suggestions?

The number 5 part is the tricky one. Its been a few years since I messed with one but I think I used a piece of electrical tape or something to put the new rivet on the end of a 3/8" extension.

After I pushed the new stop through the spring I lined up the rivet through the hole on the bump stop and then let the extension turn perpendicular to the breakover bar and set the new rivet through the mounting hole in the upper spring seat. That spring seat is steel so it isn't fragile.

Once the stop, its rivet and the breakover bar and extension were in place I just levered the extension up using the spring as a fulcrum to deploy the pin.

The tape stayed with the rivet on one of them but, even if it is still there, it isn't hurting anything. As I recall the extension wanted to stay with the stop on that one and I had to use a pair of pliers to get the extension free from the tape.

It is a real easy job.

Yesterday when I was spraying PB Baster on the shock nuts I noticed the poor condition of the bump stops. They are pretty torn up and whats left of them is pretty feeble. I should have checked them before I ordered my other parts but its been raining a lot and the driveway has been wet, Hopefully I can order them and get them in a hurry (by next saturday) without paying extra.\

Try CarQuest. They own WorldPac now and WorldPac has nearly every part for a Volvo. They tend to be URO quality parts but for a bump stop that isn't mission critical they are good enough. My local CarQuest is about a block away from the WorldPac warehouse so getting stuff through them is easy. It still takes 45 minutes to an hour for someone to drive around the block but it is prompt service. If you can get OEM part numbers from one of the other sites it helps the CarQuest counter people a ton and they can get things going for you over the phone. Sometimes WorldPac surprises me and I actually get Blue Box parts that are a ton cheaper than my Volvo dealer.

Thanks for the idea. I didn't know that about CarQuest. I don't have one too close but its good to know for future stuff. I had already ordered the parts.

I am cheap and paying twice for shipping kills me. That said I expect I'll get over it when the ribs come out of the smoker later today.
