I went to my local dealership yesterday for a free oil change. I new this meant I was going to be told about all the things that needed to be replaced, but hey, it was free oil change! Sure enough, I got the call from them and was told that I needed $3000 worth of work done on my car. One of the items was the engine mount (front lower - passenger side?) I would like to do the work, depending how hard you tell it is, because I am not willing to pay them $350. After all of that, my questions are -
Is there only one type of mount? I see some people referring to "hydraulic mounts" and others only using "mount".
What type of engine mount do I need to purchase?
Are they very expensive?
Any other information that I should know would be greatly appreciated.

"Torque rods", or upper and lower mounts, are also quit often. Hour for both.
Hydraulic mounts are roundish ones, they are what engine is bolted with to subframe. When they sag they transfer more vibration to subframe, and eventually engine may touch subframe - you'll notice that for sure. Engine support bar is highly recommended, plus you need extra space under the car to do rear one. Couple of hours, probably.

Yea the rear one was really tough. Front and side I think are pretty straightforward. The vacuum driven ones have a rubber tube coming out of the top of them (if you have them....I know the diesel has them front and back roughly along the centre line of the car)...others are not vacuum driven...did mine by supporting the engine from underneath. The parts guy at my volvo dealer said the side mounts rarely give trouble but the front/back/top and torque mount do go quite often. My vacuum mounts were around £100 each direct from volvo.

The RH mount is under the crank pulley. You will need to lift the front of engine and not do harm while lifting. A jack under that end of engine bearing against something that will spread the load on the oil pan will work. A lift beam that spans across engine bay from side to side and uses a J hook to lift engine via the lifting eye next to thermostat is the alternate.
The engine mount is easy to change one engine is supported. The mount attaches to a bracket on front of engine using two bolts and is held to the top of subframe using two bolts and nuts.
DO NOT buy anything that is Uro or Scantech brands. Genuine Volvo is the best. Items that are made by bonding rubber to metal like this mount and many suspension pieces are components where quality is critical. Inferior rubber will crack or break away from metal and you will be doing the job over again soon as a result.

When I bought my rear vacuum mount volvo also sold me a replacement bracket as the design of the mount had changed apparently. When I took the old bracket off the design looked identical to the one they supplied....maybe my car already had the upgrade who knows.

I just did both the motor mounts on my 2001. I did both. I used an engine holder AND jack. I would do them all at the same time, I think four total as you need to loosen and/or remove all of them to get the space you need to put the cone mounts in, the rear is the most difficult but not that bad. Couple write ups, I strongly suggest you take out and/or loosen everything listed. The rear one will require additional raising as it has compressed over time, so what was good to remove it will not suffice to reinstall. Ask me how I know.
