90 240 dl sedan. rearend is starting to make noise
I've been noticing whinning noises and a slight vibration in the rear end of my car. It gets real noticable around 50 mph. Possibly the gears.. my question is what would be the cause and can I fix it without goin to a shop?

Does the vibration decrease if you are coasting, or if you take your foot off the gas?

Drive lines between the models are similar enough that the info should be good for your 240.
First thing I'd do is crawl under there and check the level of the gear lube in the rear axle.

Someone needs to remove the cover and inspect things. I have heard of spider gears being worn from being stuck on ice and snow and sitting there spinning one wheel. Used parts should be available in junk yards near your area.

Thanks lummert. We've looked for parts around here but people seem to be scraping these cars. Everytime we hear of one. By the time we get to it. Its gone to the chopping block. Now we've got a new issue and I'm starting to see why the scrap them!

Unless a vehicle is rusted out underneath, most all vehicles can be brought back to life.r_ziots70 wrote:we've got a new issue and I'm starting to see why the scrap them!
I've "renewed" Volvos and GM vehicles, but I do my own labor, and money is required.
Last GM vehicle, 1989 Beretta GT, I bought for $500.00, and put $2,000.00 into it; runs fine, without issues, and I expect to get 100K plus miles on it.
Last Volvo, 1993-944 with clean body/paint, but a blown engine, I towed it home, some 600 miles round-trip, with about $1K in it then, and then I spent another $1K on it rebuilding a B23F engine for it, etc.
Btw, both of these vehicles are roadworthy...and yes, an electric fuel pump can shoot craps, in all vehicles with them, new and older vehicles...no matter how you fix a vehicle, electric/electronic parts can shoot craps, new or old.
Hence, if a person can do the labor, they can save money, and have a reliable vehicle.
ok guys i really need your help. its got gear oil.. the passenger side when you grab the tire on the rear. it has slight play. when i take off you can hear a whinning kind of noise. and another slightly different noise is commin around also. cant discribe it. it just sounds different. it vibrates at 50mph and that is getting worse. like its rear axle related. my husband thinks its bearings. Not wheel bearings. the other ones that i dont know what they are called. diff bearings. axle bearings?? he thinks spider gears or the axle bearings. can someone tell me where to get the axle bearings and what they are called for sure?? thanks

Don't just throw parts at it. You need to figure out what is causing the noise, or you'll wind up replacing everything one piece at a time. If you tear into it just get a rebuild kit and do it right the first time
