2001 70 XC Transmission Just stopped working

Post by dwbentz »

I had the Volvo v70 up at the cottage and it was about -8 F out. Shifted it in reverse and it would not roll. Tried forward and it rolled about an inch. After a few tries, it backed up and I headed a mile to the local store and then decided to try warm up the transmission to see if that would help. About 800 yards down the road the transmission gave out altogether and I had it towed back to the cabin.

Does this sound like I need the transmission replaced or is it possibly something less expensive like the B4 servo? Looking for suggestions.

It was giving me no trouble except for a rare surge from 2-3 and I had done two drain and fills in the past year.

Have you checked her trans fluid level? If low or leaking you could get out of this one without a rebuild however chances are slim. BTW forget the B4 servo. It's role is to transition 2nd gear to the 3rd gear drum.

I won't be at the cabin for two weeks. But I will bring some 3309 to try it. I will keep you posted.

My bet is B4 Servo failed and the solenoids are gummed up.

First check tranny fluid color and level. Then drain it and inspect the drain plug for large metal fragments. Drain fluid and look for fragments. My guess is you will find none unless you heard metal on metal grinding noises before it failed.

From here assuming tranny fluid stinks and is black I would rebuild your valve body, about $180 in parts with the TransGo rebuild kit (SK AW55-50) - this includes new tranny fluid. It is not a bad job, just some labor. If you rebuild the valve body note the Code - none, A or B - most likely none or A. Then when you strip it down pay careful attention to where the check balls are located - also where the check valves are located. The design changed and some have a ball where a valve was/is. I screwed up here and had to redo mine. Follow the instruction in the rebuild kit to the letter and you will be fine. I cleaned mine really well in the sink. One more thing, do not remove the glued on gasket on one of the plates. It takes forever and the replacement is not glued on. It took more time to clean this than to do the rest of the project. You can find some videos on YouTube on it - some genius Tranny Master named Hirram - he is awesome.

as above, given it happened all of a sudden on a cold morning, it could be as simple as fluid level too low inside the converter; the fluid volume does shrink when the outside temperature drops, if the level was already too low, it went even lower with the temp. happened to me, using the Valvoline thing - not sure if this fluid is different, but the level with warm transmission was fine, while on very cold mornings the car would not move at start up, just 2 minutes later.
