2001 V70 XC reverse randomly just stopped working

2001 v70 XC reverse randomly just stopped working out of no where, drive works fine, reverse does nothing but makes a clacking noise, and when going from reverse to park it grinds, but when you go from drive to park it doesn’t grind? When put in reverse that part spins around the axle without moving the axle while making some sort of grinding/clattering nose slightly

I think that is the inner CV you are descriibing. If it works forward but not reverse it won't do that for long, and needs replacement.

About $100 for a used part, maybe 2 hours labor

It spins around the inner cv joint without moving the inner cv joint itself...is that the transfer case? Was hoping it wasn’t internal gear damage, replacing the cv joint and it fixing the problem just seems to good to be true.. the car is AWD...is the front passenger wheel the only wheel that operates in reverse? It so that could be the issue hopefully...

Also, car will roll back while in park occasionally..

If the red part spins and the green part doesn't the splines are stripped in the differential

If the first part of the shaft between the arrows turns, but the outer part doesn't , thats just the CV in the shaft broken, much easier

The red part is the ONLY part that spins unfortunately..so how would I go about fixing it...and what parts are needed for fixing..thanks..

This happened to me on a Range Rover. Same issue you were describing. Just required an axle replacement.

Too cold today to replace the axle, I’ll do it in the morning..I’m PRAYING that will fix it ugh

Hang on a second here, if anything in Abscate's picture is rotating with the car in gear your front diff is fine. Front diff and your transfer case are 2 different things. Transfer case sends power to the rear wheels. Now the transfer case (bevel gear aka angle gear) is the gearbox shaped thing your rusty CV axle shaft is protruding in to and also out from. In fact, your passenger side CV axle pokes ALL the way through the bevel gear/transfer case and into the transmission (wherein lies the front diff).

From your picture, it's hard to tell exactly, but it looks to me like your inner cv boot tore or somehow became separated from the rubber to which it is supposed to be clamped. How long it's been like this, it's hard to say, but the caked grease/dirt around the area looks pretty old. So changes are your inner CV joint is kah-poot.

I for one would not mess around with any brand other than GKN/Lobro for front CV axles. Check scrap yards for low mileage used ones. New passenger side CV axles run about $300.

No part of the axle rotates at all just the bearing in the transfer case

Gotcha, make sure your cv axle is pushed all the way in first. If it is, then I’d fear for the worst.

Edit: sure seems like a bizarre occurrence. Hopefully it’s just the shaft splines & not the splines inside the trans/diff.
