My guess is that you have a bad ABS module but I have never seen one cause the battery to smoke. It sounds like you may well have another short in the wiring harness somewhere or perhaps the radiator fan is seized.

For some reason, the car was trying to stop itself so that it wouldn't keep moving. It felt like the traction control was trying to stop the car while I accelerated it. A guy that I know who works on Volvos told me to unplug the ABS fuse under the hood. And after that the battery was smoking a little and was real hot to the touch.

Oh boy.
Every single ABS module fails between 1996 and 2001. You have it rebuilt by Matty Moo (he advertises here) and it will never fail again, he's very reasonable.
You need a special Torx (female E5 IIRC) to remove it and by now the bolts may be very rusted and seized. So... if you're trying to do this yourself be VERY careful.
Your battery I don't know. One should have nothing to do with the other.
You may have a bad wheel sensor for it to act up this way

I think it would be right around $89. On your car you would test it by getting the abs codes read at a shop or dealer.

So the ABS and traction lights are off now. But, now my battery keeps dying. I got a brand new battery yesterday and the car cranked up. But, this morning I try to crank it and it doesn't work. What could be draining or killing my battery?

(Sigh again)
You really need to read up on what you own, what goes bad, etc.
The battery cables on these cars go bad.
You need to have someone do a general charging, cable and battery test. If you knew what to look for you can visually check out the B+ cable but you don't.
You may need to replace the B+ and positive cables. If they've never been replaced I can almost guarantee you that they're bad and are not allowing a full charge (or any charge)!
Of course the alternator needs to be tested along with the cables. All this takes is 5 to 10 minutes and takes the guessing out of the equation. Crapping out a new battery in one day sounds more like a shot alternator (along with the cables).
