Working on my 98 volvo xc v70 awd and when the heat gauge reaches midway it dies out and will not start. It does not over heat. The gauge (heat) goes 1/2 way up and it simply dies out. Driving it home from where it stalled last the people following me said it was blowing out red hot chunks. I have had vehicles with plugged catylitic converters so i cut that off. But i also removed the 02 sensor in the process. I started the vehicle and it did exaclty the same thing it gets war/hot heat gauge 1/2 way up and it dies out. When i try to start it again it turns over fine but will not start or if it does it dies immediately only to leave me stranded. So far I have tested fuel pressure, vacuum and now the coolant sensor. I had a 93 Dodge Power Ram 5.2L that acted the same way and it was the coolant sensor. I tested the coolant sensor with hot water and it reads from 2.56 on a 20k scale when at room temp to .25 when put in 90C water. Much similar to a new one i have for a 99 that does not fit in the 98.
With a flashlight one night when it was running I noticed something dripping from under the distributor cap which leads me to believe that the oil has a lot of gas in it. The substance dripping is black but it burns more readily than what I would suspect motor oil would.
Also the fuel pressure drops readily when the car is shut down, probably looses about 1 to 2 psi per minute.
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm is leaking fuel ....check that before you drive again.volvo_8621 wrote:Working on my 98 volvo xc v70 awd and when the heat gauge reaches midway it dies out and will not start.
