1995 850 Idle air control valve

Post by zanemw »

My car has been having an interesting problem driving around town, I get it warmed up and a little hot about 200 degrees or up to 210 and I turn it off. I walk to the store or wherever I'm going and come back maybe 10 -20 minutes and get back in the car doesn't want start is sputtering and seems like it cant get started and stalls after starting. I noticed one day that the Idle control valve was humming like crazy when I had stalled and couldn't get it to start at all. I unplugged the Idle air control valve and it started right up and then I plugged it back in and it ran like normal. Is the Idle Air control valve going bad or is it an electrical issue with the ECU? It confusing and it pisses off the wife having the car stall in the parking lot so I'm trying to figure out what could be causing it and if its just the idle air control valve has started to go bad? Anyone having this issue?

I had a similar problem on my '97 855 GLT and wrote up the cleaning procedure for the IAC here:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=47533
The cleaning worked pretty well to prevent hot stalling for about a year and a half, and then I had stalling symptoms again so I eventually replaced the IAC valve with another one harvested from a car in the junkyard. That was about three months ago and so far all is well.
I took the old original IAC valve apart to see what was worn and it seemed like the rotor inside was shifting side to side slightly and rubbing and binding on the magnets in the case. At the time I suspected that the shifting was due to a worn bushing or bearing but I couldn't feel any play or detect anything obviously wrong with the bearing.
All in all, I'd recommend putting in another IAC valve... it's easy to swap and there are generally many of them available in the junkyard. I've got two or three extras in a shoebox just in case I should ever need one.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

Thank you for the link, I'll try that and see if I can get it working.
