'99 S70 Base -- Passenger temp. control knob won't turn

Noticed this morning that the temperature control knob on the passenger side of the dash does not want to rotate past about 10 o'clock. Feels like there is some kind of mechanical resistance opposing it. Is this the dreaded damper link rod failure?

I read on another thread that the climate control unit pushes out from behind the dash with the radio removed. Mine doesn't seem to want to budge. Do I have the removal mechanism correct? Does it simply push out from behind with the radio gone? I have the manual climate control unit. Thanks.

All data says the climate temp knobs come off and there are two screws to be removed to remove MCC control unit
