96 850 speedo problem

Post by Derek »

Hello again,

Another question about my car. I had the overheating problem from the first moment I drove the car. I think the speedo worked at the time but I'm not totally sure. Now the overheating problem is fixed and I want to sort the speedo problem.

A recent repair order that came with the car said the odometer wasn't working. I'm not sure if there is a direct coorelation there. One other thing is I had the dash most of the way out while I was replacing the ac evaporator. I'm thinking something I did may have messed up the speedo. The other functions in the dash seem to be working fine.

I'm not overly concerned if the odometer doesn't work but the speedometer would be real nice to have. Cops are a bitch around here.

Any ideas about what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Thanks much!

Derek

They'll probably tell you a little gear is broken and it needs to be replaced inside of your odometer/speedometer. It is very common and over 95% of what you described in your first post indicates you need to replace the gear.

Here's some recent discussion with pictures about it: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=8398

Wow, what a nicely guided tour of what it's going to take to fix it.

2 questions though. Should I go to odometer.com for the gear or can I simply order it from the Volvo dealer? And the other question; Does this also take care of the speedometer not working? I know that's probably a stupid question but I didn't see it mentioned that this repairs the speedometer too. Just want to make sure before I get started.

Thanks,

Derek

The Volvo dealer is not going to have the part(s) for you to order. They are not into repair at all. What they do is just replace things, but entire units. In other words, they will want to order you a whole instrument cluster. Order both of the gears that can be bought and replace both of them while you have the cluster out. From what I understand, this will solve both your odometer and speedometer issue.
