2001 V70T5 major idle issues...

Post by carboncow »

I've had a bad o2 sensor for some time (one over cat) and other then a little poorer gas mileage and a CEL not much to complain about. Pulled codes with VIDA DICE and reset the o2 code (trim bank 1 or such) and what is odd is the CEL never came back although the code does.

After this happened my idle went bad on the way to work...car stalls at lights even with AC off. The idle can be observed at this video: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106 ... roject.m4v

I thought maybe another bad ETM (currently only yellow label with 80K+ miles on this one) as I have most of the classic symptoms listed by MADEINJAPAN as listed in the ETM forum, but...

When I do the ETM test in VIDA DICE I have what appears to be only a failure of 0.79 degrees (minimum threshold for failure is 13.0 degrees) and my graphs look spot on compared to videos on youtube that show what a bad ETM graphs at.

My video is here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106 ... 281%29.m4v

What else to consider for a bad idle that came out of no where?

clean MAF and ETM?
dont' hear any vac leaks and the idle issue is not present the first 30+ secs of start up...I'd expect a vac leak to give issue right from the beginning no?

I tried disconnecting both o2 sensor and the MAF to send them into static mode and this didn't impact the idle in any way.

Thoughts?

I had a stalling problem which I attributed to my MAF...spent a lot of time cleaning the old sensor....bought a used sensor....no luck. In the end I remembered the problem started shortly after I ran the fuel tank drown to the red line....changed the fuel filter and all sorted. The symptoms were very odd...it was like the car was detecting the fuel blockage as a major fuel leak and shutting down the engine! Can't guarantee it's the cause but the filters are cheap so maybe worth a try unless you know it's already been changed.

Thanks BB...was beginning to consider fuel flow with the pressure regulator or filter (filter is way over due) but just couldn't get past the fact it drove better at higher flow rates!

We just figured it out when we went to pull the MAF for cleaning.

The intake temp sensor (upstream from the ETM on pipe from the intercooler to the ETM) had popped out. It doesn't really have a way to be held in so I just zip tied it...idle is back to normal.

No code about a bad reading so the temp must have just been off enough with the air disruption to cause the issue.
