'98 V70 T5M Hard to move shifter side to side

Post by echase76 »

Hi Folks,

I'm having trouble moving my shifter side to side and it seems to be getting stickier. Once over in the 1/2 or 5/R slots it shifts just fine into gear. Not grinding or anything. It is just getting over there that is hard.

Going from 1/2 or 3/4 is smooth too. I changed the fluid with OEM 30k ago and the transmission itself is fine in gear.

Are there linkages that need greased or bushings that are failing?

Thanks for the help!

Pull the shift boot and check that the white plastic "cap" piece is still in place and not cracked. Mine cracked and I had to temporarily zip tie it in order to get the shift lever into 1/2. You can see the crack to the left of the zip tie. In order to replace it, the shift knob needs to be removed and new socket/cap fitted into place. The cap is supposed to have tabs that hold it to the shifter housing, but mine have broken off.

Thanks Seaway! I just found your thread on Sweedspeed about your issue.

Will take a look tonight and report back.

Does anyone know what kind of grease is used on the shifter ball above?

I asked Matt but he doesn't have a standard shift.....

The grease on mine is white, so maybe white lithium grease?

Finally got in there. Lubed things up and it is better, but still a little rough going to the 1/2 side. No cracked ball cap to speak of.

Also pulled the air box and lubed linkages at the transmission.

I still feel like there is an issue there, maybe just needs all the plastic parts refreshed? Anyone do this before? I think I saw a lookingforjoe thread once.

Thanks!

I have read that the rubber bushings at the linkage connections can make things feel mushy and not precise. Mine has what appear to be brass bushings and there are stainless bushings for sale here: http://snabb.us/Stainless-Steel-Shifter ... _p_23.html

Might make things better for you.

Well, the magical Volvo fairies came by and fixed the problem. After more than a month of issues, one day everything went back to normal. Over a 2 week span I lubed everything I could from the transmission back to the shifter at least 4 times and nothing was working. My wife was harassing me to take it in to the shop and then Bam all is well.

I have no idea what happened, but all is well except for the sudden low idle that is unrelated. On to the next issue...

Thanks for all the help.
